UK ETA Processing Time: What to Expect

Most UK ETAs are approved within minutes of submission — often before you've even closed the browser tab. The UK government asks you to apply at least 3 working days before travel, not because that's how long it normally takes, but to cover the small percentage of applications that get flagged for additional security checks.

What "3 working days" actually means

The 3-working-day guideline is a buffer, not the typical timeline. Weekends and UK public holidays don't count. If you apply Friday afternoon, working days only start Monday. If you're travelling on a Tuesday and apply the Friday before, you're cutting it very close — apply the week before to be safe.

The two states your application will be in

Your ETA is either approved (you get an email from the Home Office with your authorisation) or it's pending additional checks. There is no in-between and no partial approval. If you haven't received your approval email, the application is still being processed.

  • Approved: email arrives from no-reply@notifications.service.gov.uk within minutes to a few hours
  • Additional checks: application held for manual review — can take 3–7 working days
  • Refused: rare, but possible — you'll receive a refusal notice by email

What triggers "additional checks"

The UK doesn't publish its criteria, but common triggers include: a criminal record (including old or minor offences), prior visa refusals or overstays in any country, identity database mismatches, or a passport that's been flagged in an international travel database. Most additional-check applications are still approved — they just take longer.

How to check your ETA status

Use the official UK ETA app (iOS / Android) and log in with the email address you used to apply. The status will show as "approved" or remain in a processing state. You can also search your inbox — approvals arrive quickly and sometimes land in spam. If it's been more than 5 working days and you're still in "processing," contact the Home Office at ukvisas@homeoffice.gov.uk with your application reference number.

If you're flying in less than 48 hours

There is no expedited or priority processing option. If your application is in "additional checks" and your flight is tomorrow, contact your airline — most have a process for passengers waiting on travel authorisation. If your ticket is flexible, consider rebooking. Don't show up at the airport without a confirmed ETA and hope for the best: airlines are required to check before boarding and won't let you fly without one.

Common questions

How long does UK ETA approval take?

Most are approved within minutes. Officially, allow 3 working days. Applications flagged for additional checks can take up to 7 working days.

What does "additional checks" mean on my UK ETA?

Your application has been held for manual review — usually triggered by a flag in a security or immigration database. Most additional-check applications are still approved. Check back after 2–3 working days.

Can I speed up my UK ETA application?

No. There is no expedited or priority processing option. See our separate guide on what actually reduces delay risk.

My UK ETA hasn't arrived and my flight is tomorrow. What do I do?

Contact your airline immediately. Explain you're waiting on a pending ETA. If your ticket allows changes, consider rebooking by a few days. Do not attempt to check in without a confirmed ETA — you won't be allowed to board.
