UK ETA for US Citizens
Since February 2025, all US citizens visiting the UK for tourism, business, or short visits need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they fly. It costs £16, takes about 3 working days, and is valid for 2 years with multiple entries.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital pre-travel screening — similar to the US ESTA. It's linked to your passport and authorises you to travel to the UK for up to 6 months per visit. It is not a visa; it's a pre-check that lets the UK approve you before you board.
Who needs one (and who doesn't)
All US passport holders need a UK ETA, including children and infants. Each person needs their own.
- US citizens: yes, ETA required
- Dual citizens with a UK or Irish passport: no — use that passport instead
- Green Card holders without US citizenship: depends on your passport country
- Anyone transiting through Heathrow or other UK airports: yes, still need an ETA
How much it costs and how long it takes
The official fee is £16 per person, paid by card during the online application. Most decisions come back within minutes; the UK government says to apply at least 3 working days before travel to be safe. Your ETA is valid for 2 years OR until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
What you need to apply
You'll need a valid biometric passport, a working email, a card to pay, and a recent digital photo (the app captures it through your phone camera or you upload one). Allow about 10 minutes per person.
How to apply (the official way)
Apply directly through the UK Home Office at gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta or via the official "UK ETA" mobile app on iOS and Android. The official fee is £16; if you see higher prices on third-party sites, that's a service fee on top.

Do US citizens need a UK ETA to visit?
Yes. All US passport holders need a UK ETA to enter the UK for tourism, business, or short visits up to 6 months. Apply at least 3 working days before travel.
How long is the UK ETA valid?
A UK ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can enter the UK multiple times during that window, with stays of up to 6 months each.
Can I work in the UK with a UK ETA?
No. The ETA covers tourism, family visits, business meetings, and short courses. It does not authorise paid work — you'd need a UK work visa for that.
What if I have both a US and a UK passport?
Travel on your UK passport — you don't need an ETA. If your UK passport is expired and you only have your US one, you'll need an ETA.
