Travelling to Europe with a Toddler in 2026

Yes, your toddler needs their own passport, their own UK ETA, and their own ETIAS — no exceptions for age. The good news: ETIAS is free for kids under 18, and we'll walk you through every paperwork step.

Passport rules for toddlers

Toddler passports in the US are valid for 5 years, not 10. Allow 6+ weeks for first-time passport applications, and longer if you need to add a name change or re-apply for a lost passport. The passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond your return date.

UK ETA — yes, even for toddlers

If you're visiting the UK with your toddler, they need their own UK ETA at £16. The application uses the toddler's passport photo (the same one on their passport) and asks the usual security questions. Children's applications are usually approved fast.

ETIAS for toddlers (after October 2026)

ETIAS is free for anyone under 18, but the application still needs to be completed for each child. The application takes 10 minutes per child. Each child gets their own approval tied to their passport.

EES at the border with a toddler

The new EU Entry/Exit System captures biometrics (fingerprints + photo) on first entry for all non-EU travellers. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint capture but still have their photo taken. Plan for extra time at the border on your first family entry post-EES rollout.

Common questions

Does a 2-year-old need a UK ETA?

Yes. There are no age exemptions — every passport holder needs their own ETA at £16.

Does a baby need ETIAS?

Yes. Every passport holder visiting Schengen countries needs ETIAS starting October 2026 — but it's free for anyone under 18.

Can I apply for my toddler's ETA from my own account?

Each ETA is a separate application tied to one passport. You can apply from the same device but each application is independent.
