EES Europe Explained

EES — the Entry/Exit System — is a new EU biometric border system that replaces passport stamps with digital records of every non-EU traveller's entries and exits. There's no application and no fee, but it does affect how long the border takes the first time you enter.

What EES is

EES captures your fingerprints (people 12+) and a photo on your first entry into the Schengen Area. It records every entry and exit from then on. The system replaces physical passport stamps — and makes overstaying the 90-day rule essentially impossible to fake.

How EES is different from ETIAS

EES is automatic — no application, no fee, happens at the border. ETIAS is a pre-travel online authorisation — €20, applied for at home before flying. Both are EU systems but they're separate.

Who EES applies to

All non-EU/EEA/Swiss travellers entering Schengen for short stays (under 90 days). It includes Americans, Brits, Canadians, Australians, and everyone else who currently doesn't need a visa. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint capture but still get photographed.

The first-entry experience

When you arrive at a Schengen airport (or any external Schengen border) for the first time after EES is live, you'll be directed to a kiosk or staffed booth to register your biometrics. Plan for an extra 15–30 minutes at the airport on first entry. Subsequent entries are faster — just a quick face scan.

What this means for the 90/180 rule

EES makes Schengen overstay detection automatic. The days when you could "lose" a stamp or fly under the radar are over. Track your days carefully — our free Schengen Family Calculator helps.

Common questions

Do I need to apply for EES?

No. EES has no application and no fee. Biometrics are captured automatically at the border on your first entry after rollout.

When does EES launch?

EES rolled out gradually starting in October 2025 and is fully operational across all Schengen external borders by 2026.

Do children need EES registration?

Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint capture but still have their photo taken. Children 12+ provide fingerprints like adults.
